The NY HUT Permit (New York Highway Use Tax Permit) is imposed on motor carriers operating certain motor vehicles on New York State public highways. The tax is based on mileage traveled at a rate determined by the weight of the motor vehicle.
A NY HUT certificate of registration is required for any truck, tractor, or other self-propelled vehicles with a gross weight in excess of 18,000 pounds.
New York Highway Use Tax (HUT) will be part of your annual renewals this year if you drive commercially within that state on public highways. Toll-paid portions of the New York State Thruway are excluded from the Highway Use Tax.
This will be the 22nd series for the HUT and the renewal period will start this October 1, 2018.
This permit will place your truck VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and Tag number on file with the State of New York. You will also receive a sticker to place on the front of your truck to be displayed at all time while traveling in New York.

Dot Control Authority will submit your application to the state electronically as soon as we receive your order. Typically, the state will generate your new account and issue a temporary certificate within 1 business day.
Once you have the NY HUT account issued, you will need to file your HUT quarterly reports in a timely manner to keep your certificate in good standing.
The quarterly reports will be mailed to you by the state at the end of each quarter. The quarterly reports are due the last day of the month following the end of the quarter.

Head to your local NY DMV office:
- Provide proof of identity totaling 6 points, with your signature on at least one of these documents.
- Complete and submit an Application for Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card (Form MV-44).
- Pay the appropriate fee.
- Take a vision test.
- Pass a written knowledge exam
